Surrounding the Mariners' Museum, the 550-acre Mariners' Museum Park gives visitors the chance to explore the beauty of Newport News whether they visit the museum or not. In the center of the park is Lake Maury, and during the summer visitors can rent canoes or decorated paddle boats in shapes like pirate ships and gondolas. Fishing is allowed in the lake, though it's plenty of fun to simply float around the 167-acre lake on the lookout for interesting wildlife and cool natural features. The wooded grounds prove a romantic destination for an afternoon walk or picnic, as well as being a popular spot for runners to work out. Located along the bayfront, look for Lion's Bridge, the dam decorated by stone lions that affords an amazing view of the James River.
Open daily dawn - dusk.
Free entry. Paddle boats (hourly fee): Adults $7.50; Children $4.50. Boats (hourly fee): $4 - $7.
